PPC + Economic Growth

You can predict how much a country’s economy will grow, with one simple model.

In the previous entry, we talked about the production possibilities frontier, which is the curve showing everything an economy can produce with the resources it has right now. But that curve isn't fixed forever. As an economy grows, the whole curve can shift outward, meaning it can produce more, down the road.

But how do you actually predict this?

Imagine two countries with identical resources today. Presentville pours almost everything into consumer goods, which is the stuff people can use and enjoy right now. Futureville pours more into capital goods, like machinery, factories, equipment. Not money. Actual tools used to produce more stuff later.

Fast forward a few years, and Futureville's curve has shifted outward further than Presentville's. Because they invested in the tools of production instead of just the products themselves, Futureville can now produce more of everything, including consumer goods.

So where a country chooses to sit on its PPF today doesn't just decide what it enjoys right now. It also predicts how fast it'll grow. That's the real reason some economies pull ahead over time.
